Episode 1 - Lubbock Light Infantry v Beazer’s Comics (with OTB 154 Part 1) Phew! Good fun and it seemed to work. When you do a series, you always want to have the first one behind you. Chris Beazer, so good in On The Beat, slipped up in a quiz setting.

1988

Episode 10 - Black and White v Wilmington Wanderers (with OTB 158 Part 1) A very close match, but Wilmington Wanderers let themselves down by not recognising Elvis Presley.

1988

Episode 11 - Ageing Groovies v Melismatics (with OTB 159 Part 1) Again closely fought, I think indicating that the questions were fairly balanced (at least, I hope so), but then…

1988

Episode 12 – The A-Side v Stanley Arms Cabaret Lounge (with OTB 159 Part 2) …this was a convincing win for A-side

1988

Semi-final Episode 13 – Black and White v Sound Trek (with OTB 160 Part 1) The segue of four voices singing the same song had now grown to six and so there were 24 points riding on that, in this episode ‘My Way’ and the next week, ‘Little Green Apples’.

1988

Episode 14 – Ageing Groovies v The A-Side (with OTB 160 Part 2) The Ageing Groovies ageing well, a well-balanced team.

1988

Final Episode 15 – Ageing Groovies v Sound Trek (with OTB 161 Part 1) This programme was chosen for inclusion in the National Sound Archive and Andy Linehan, the curator had put together 10 versions of ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’. Sound Trek did astonishingly well on that. Radio Merseyside provided shields for the teams in the final.

1988

Celebrity Special Episode 16 - Sound Trek v Celebrities (Ray Ennis, Tony Crane, Mike McCartney) (with OTB 161 Part 2) Sound Trek (61 points) beat Celebrities (53) by eight points) in a very entertaining match. The final round was of songs with a gardening connection as Jenny Collins was following the next week with her Growbiz quiz.

1988

Episode 2 - Ageing Groovies v Deadbeats (with OTB 154 Part 2) Ageing Grooves were captained by singer/songwriter Pete Rimmer from the Bothy Folk Club.

1988

Episode 3 – Sunshine Radio v Wilmington Wanderers (with OTB 155 Part 1) Sunshine Radio, a hospital station from Fazackerley, Phil Cain, Neil Crosby, Alan Edge (who had a show, Medical Records). Helen Reddy’s acceptance speech for a Grammy: “I would like to thank God because she made everything possible.” Team from Wilmington Employment Agency

1988

Episode 4 – Black and White v Alexanders (with OTB 155 Part 2) Bob Beattie from Black and White had a very good knowledge

1988

Episode 5 - Sound Trek v Huyton’s Wizards (with OTB 156 Part 1) Sound Trek was a family team while Ray Huyton was an accountant who dreamed of writing TV comedies.

1988

Episode 6 - Brookside v Melismatics (with OTB 156 Part 2) Jan Smiley (casting), Mal Young (floor manager) and Nick Orchard (associate producer). Before I played this back, I felt bad as the lyrics round and the mystery voice were definitely easier for the Melismatics. However, it didn’t really matter as they beat Brookside by 73 points to 40 anyway. Nick Orchard was from Canada and the one Canadian question he got wrong.

1988

Episode 7 - Lord Street Job Centre v Stanley Arms Cabaret Lounge (with OTB 157 Part 1) Folk singer and musician Tony Gibbons was leading the Lord Street Job Centre but he didn’t recognize Joni Mitchell’s voice and they were no match for John Rogers with the duo who performed at the Stanley Arms, Billy Cox and Alan Crowley.

1988

Episode 8 - The A-Side v The Three Wise Men (with OTB 157 Part 2) David Crosby of Rox records was part of the A-Side with two members who saw Eric Clapton at every opportunity. This was a fierce, high-scoring fight with the Three Wise Men led by Mick O’Toole but they won by a small margin.

1988

Quarter-finals Episode 9 - Sound Trek v Lubbock Light Infantry (with OTB 158 Part 2) Sound Trek doing very well here but a high scoring game with over 120 points in all. Five versions of ‘The Air That I Breathe’ to identify, so a tough quiz.
